Do you need to add more plant-based protein to your diet?

Trendy nutrients A-Z plant-based protein Rick Hay Healthista

Healthista’s nutritional director Rick Hay explains the benefits of adding more plant based protein to your diet (clue: it helps burn fat)

‘Plant-based proteins are packed full of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes,’ says Hay.

‘They are particularly good in weight management as they keep you fuller for longer with little fat, and can help with toning and the growth of lean muscle mass. And when you get lean muscle mass, your body burns fat more efficiently.

‘Plant based protein can also help boost energy levels, protect your cardiovascular system and turbo charge your immune system,’ explains Hay.

An American collaborative study to examine the associations of animal and plant protein intake with the risk for mortality published in the Journal of American Medical Association found that high animal protein intake was positively associated with cardiovascular mortality and high plant protein intake was inversely associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, especially among individuals with at least one more lifestyle risk factor.

‘Furthermore, substitution of plant protein for animal protein, especially that from processed red meat, was associated with lower mortality, suggesting the importance of protein source.
