Surya Namaskar – Sun Salutation
After learning the chaturanga in day seven, the next step in our yoga challenge is to learn the Sun Salutation. This brings previously-learned poses together in a gracefully coordinated flow with the breath.
Also known as Surya Namaskar, this sequence of postures stimulates the entire body and is intended to improve the strength and flexibility of the muscles.
Sun Salutations are often used as a warm-up during yoga practice, and are considered part of the foundation of vinyasa. The sequence begins with a standing pose, and incorporates the plank, chaturanga and downward facing dog poses.
