Beyonce and the rise of Flexi-veganism

Vegan Beyoncé has just announced she still occasionally eats meat. The superstar has joined an emerging tribe of new ‘Flexi-vegans’ who do the same

Beyoncé has just announced she still occasionally eats meat, after publically living as a vegan since her and Jay-Z completed the 22 day challenge back in 2013. During an announcement on Good Morning America Beyoncé said ‘Now, you know, I still eat meat and it’s all about balance, but absolutely I make better choices.’

It’s not about perfection, it’s about progression

Beyonce’s lifestyle plan, created by her nutritionist Marco Borges, focuses on a carb-heavy, plant-based vegan diet, so naturally no meat or dairy is allowed. In his new Beyoncé-endorsed promo video, Borges says: ‘22 Days is about allowing people to define plant-based living the way that works best for them’. The diet completely rules out dairy, gluten and eggs, but Borges believes that after the initial 22 days are up people can alter the plan in a way which suits them. This is why Beyoncé and others following his ‘vegan’ plan can occasionally eat meat. ‘It’s not about perfection, it’s about progression,’ says Borges.

In the Good Morning America clip Beyoncé praises her new lifestyle, saying ‘I felt like my skin was really firm, a lot tighter…and the weight stayed off.’ Speaking of her previous battle with diets Beyoncé also revealed ‘I am not naturally the thinnest. I have curves. I’m proud of my curves and I have struggled since a young age with diets and finding something that actually works, actually keeps the weight off, has been difficult for me’.

Borges (far left) says people percieve veganism as being all of nothing, but he believes it’s not about that

Beyoncé slimmed down to tiny size 6 after completing Borges’ The 22-Day Revolution: The plant-based programme that will transform your body, reset your habits, and change your life saying her energy naturally increased, she slept better, sustained weight loss, and had improved digestion and clarity.

Beyonce’s flexible approach to veganism – we like calling it Flexi-veganism – where devotees mainly live on non-animal products but if they fancy meat or fish once in a while, they won’t get their hemp sandals in a twist – is becoming more and more popular. It offers a) a less intense and easier to stick-to option than the daunting prospect of being a strict vegan and b) the occasional bit of pizza.  For example, YouTube yoga superstar Tara Stiles, author of Make Your Own Rules Diet, follows a similar diet pattern. Believing in veganism, she does however enforce that you should do whatever works for you, and you should make your own diet rules. If that means the occasional slice of pizza or steak then that’s completely fine.  We couldn’t agree more.
