How to destress – the breathing technique this Instagram yoga star wants you to know

Our new One Minute Mindfulness series with Vikings actress and yoga teacher Maude Hirst, founder of Energy Rise, shows you how to destress in three simple steps

According to a recent study by Mental Health Foundation, nearly 74 per cent of participants had at some point felt so overwhelmed, they were unable to cope with the stress they were under.

Despite most of us knowing we’re stressed, taking measures to combat it often feels like more work than simply complaining about it. However, breathing is something we do unconsciously in every waking moment of our lives and when approached with mindfulness, it can help us manage stress better.

Psychiatrists in New York have found coherent breathing to be beneficial for mental health. In fact, as shown by this study, the breathing technique has effectively been utilized for survivors of genocides, earthquakes, tsunamis and various other global disasters.

With research pointing towards the positive impact of breathing techniques, trying coherence breath work could help manage stress levels and bring you into a state of zen.  Watch the video above to see how:

Coherent breathing technique in 3 simple steps

1) Close your eyes, bringing awareness to your breathing

2) Start to count to six on your inhales

3) Count 6 seconds on your exhales

Continue like this for 10 minutes.
