The 89th Oscars ceremony took place last night, and the red carpet was graced with the hottest talented women. Here are Healthista’s top five bodies, and how they were achieved
We love a celebrity body secret here at Healthista Towers – so you can imagine how excited we get during awards season. Here are our favourite Oscar bodies from last night and the details for how they got there.
Naomie Harris OBE
Yes, you read it right. Naomie received an OBE from the queen last week, and her latest film Moonlight, a coming of age drama about a homosexual black man, took the Best Picture award, beating La La Land. She stepped onto the red carpet last night in a white strapless dress, revealing her incredibly toned physique. ‘As a black actress from the background I came from, I think it’s incredibly important’, the actress told the BBC after receiving her OBE.
I’m Miss Clean Living
Naomie Harris was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her role as a crack addict mother Paula in Moonlight. She has expressed her difficulty taking on the role, and almost turned it down for her ‘judgement’ and preconceptions about playing someone with a drug problem on screen. ‘It was something that really scared me’, the Metro reported Naomie saying at the Santra Barbara International Film Festival. ‘I thought, “Will I be able to reach a character like this? Because here I am – I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t even drink coffee. I’m Miss Clean Living and I’m going to go to crack addiction. How am I going to reach that?”’
The only experience of addiction Naomie told the Huffington Post she has had is of bad reality TV and dark chocolate. But after her journey preparing for the role, Naomie felt a better person. ‘You find you grow as a performer and you grow as a human being’, she said.
I’ve had Shepherd’s pie for breakfast
The 40 year old has previously described her healthy living journey as obsessive and interesting. ‘I went down the raw-food diet route, but got ill. It was really hard, especially in Britain in winter, trying to survive on raw carrots. I became so ill and was anaemic, so I stopped that’, she told the Daily Mail.
Now Naomie sticks to a healthy diet that steers clear of sugar and caffeine, but it is her breakfast that is really unique. ‘Everyone is always really weirded out by my breakfast… I don’t see any difference between breakfast and lunch. So I will have the same for lunch as I’d have for breakfast – I’ve had Shepherd’s pie in the morning. Or sometimes fried fish and vegetables… I went to Jamaica and it’s exactly the same… So it’s basically my roots! It’s in my genes’, she told Women’s Health.
In terms of fitness, Naomie is a fan of gyrotonics – a mixture of yoga, reformer Pilates and tai chi. ‘I have a gyrotonics machine at my home which takes up a whole room’, she told the Independent.
Emma Stone
Unsurprisingly, the beautiful red-head Emma Stone took Best Actress last night. But Emma has already moved on from the Hollywood Musical La La Land, from what she has also won a Golden Globe and BAFTA award for her role this year. In the summer we will see the release of Battle of the Sexes, in which Emma had to gain weight for her role of tennis player Billie Jean King. To prepare, Emma told the Hollywood Reporter ‘I gained 15 pounds of muscle. Lots of protein shakes and heavy lifting.’
I have a deep-seated rage when I’m holding heavy weights over my head
Emma has previously revealed she is relaxed about her fitness regime, telling S Magazine, ‘I’m usually a pretty peaceful person, but for some reason when I get in the gym something bubbles up in me… I discovered I have deep-seated rage when I’m holding heavy weights over my head’.
Her LA personal trainer Jason Walsh, who created the Rise Movement, must have had his work cut out for him then.
In an interview with Healthista, Jason said the move he swears by is the deadlift. ‘It’s a complex movement that incorporates every major muscle group working together. It’s very important’, he said, alongside a sensible diet. ‘I limit all sugars, and I add UDO’s Choice Oil to food daily for essential fats. That’s where I get my energy from, not sugar. You could lose 10lbs immediately just from cutting out sugar, and I think that, and the abundance of carbohydrates is the root to most obesity in the US. You’ve never heard of essential sugars and/or carbohydrates, right?!’

Eat the damn red velvet cupcake
Despite her killer figure on the red carpet, Emma does go against her personal trainer’s advice now and again, staying away from restrictive diets. She was able to enjoy all she liked during filming of The Help, putting on a few pounds with all the treats and on-set catering, but said in an interview with Glamour, ‘you are a human being, you live once and life is wonderful, so eat the damn red velvet cupcake’.
Michelle Williams
American actress Michelle Williams, nominated for Best Supporting Actress, has been gracing the cinematic screen seen her debut in Lassie, and her latest film Manchester By The Sea has been nominated for a total of six Oscars, of which it took home two. The petite 5ft 4 mother, who gracefully pulled off a low cut halterneck dress, isn’t a fan of the gym, telling Glamour, ‘I couldn’t ever undertake working, exercising and raising a child. I think when you’re working, which I haven’t been for the past nine months, exercise is a far off land, and no one should ever make themselves feel bad for getting to the gym while raising kids and having a career… Fuck the gym.’
Yoga gave me relief like nothing else; it made me a better person and a better mother
She does, however, go on to reveal that after enjoying a spontaneous group exercise class with other mums similar to a dance party, ‘exercise is that as much as it’s for your body, it’s more for your brain’. She has before spoken about her practice of yoga getting through a painful time after the death of her partner and daughter’s father Heath ledger in 2007. ‘Yoga gave me relief like nothing else; it made me a better person and a better mother. I could come back to my daughter anew,’ she told Marie Claire. The Yoga For Single Moms Project was then launched with friends and Boston yoga instructors Chanel Luck and Bonnie Argo to provide mothers free childcare whilst they can relax and do a yoga class.
Michelle was eating a pint of ice cream for breakfast and dinner
Throughout her various on-screen roles, Michelle has had to achieve weight loss and weight gain, and one time competed with her co-star Ryan Gosling. For the role of an unhappy mother in Blue Valentine, Michelle gained over two stone in weight, just one or two pounds more than Ryan. The director, David Cianfrance, revealed she threw herself into the challenge. ‘Michelle was eating a pint of ice cream for breakfast and dinner and avocado sandwiches all day,’ he said. ‘She ate that [Purely] Decadent stuff made with coconut milk. Supposedly the coconut milk, the oil, has a lot of fat in it, and it’s hard for your body to break it down.’

Nicole Kidman
Australian actress Nicole Kidman terrifically portrayed Sue in Lion, a mother who has adopted Indian orphan boy Saroo (played by Devel Patel). Nicole was moved by the Lion’s script and it’s ‘simplicity of love’. She missed out on Best Supporting Actress, but still turned heads in a nude coloured diamante Armani gown.
Nicole Kidman is often papped out jogging, swimming, hiking, and playing or watching tennis. She is quite the fitness enthusiast, often being praised for her toned pins, saying a variety of workouts is key to staying motivated.
It’s so important that we teach our kids the benefits of an active lifestyle
The 49-year-old is particularly keen for spinning classes and running, growing up with the influence of her father who ran marathons and 10-mile runs at the age of 71, according to Popsugar. Family fitness has continued on into her own family. ‘Growing up in Sydney, we were always running around as kids’, the mother of four told the Los Angeles Times. ‘With rising obesity levels in developed countries across the world, it’s so important that we teach our kids the benefits of an active lifestyle’.
I pretty much eat anything, but all in moderation
The actress has also revealed how, or how not, she follows a diet regime. ‘There’s certainly no secret regimen. I wish there was’, she has said, insisting she will indulge if she feels like it. ‘I’m actually not that strict with my diet. I pretty much eat anything, but all in moderation’.
Nicole also takes vitamins alongside her balanced diet, and is the face for wellness brand Swisse, for which Alesha Dixon is the UK ambassador. Nicole takes the multivitamin Women’s Ultivite every day to help fill any nutrition gaps she has when on the road.
The youthful star also takes Swisse Ultiboost Hair Skin Nails+ Body & Beauty vitamins for a number of years after suffering from hair loss. ‘After I had my baby, my hair got so thin’, Nicole has said. ‘I used to have really thick hair; now it has all come back’. She has also reverted back to her loose ringlets, embracing the curls she once had; ‘My littlest daughter has the same hair. She likes it when my hair is curly, so I wear it for her’. Nicole revealed to Italian newspaper La Repubblica she did try Botox, but avoids it now insisting ‘I wear sunscreen, I don’t smoke and I take care of myself, and I am proud to say that’. It certainly shows how well she cares for herself!

Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson took a style shift at the awards last night, opting for a high-necked golden Gucci number – bold and elegant. She was at the Oscars last night introducing a category with co-star Jamie Dornan, who both are keeping on top of their fit physiques following Fifty Shades Darker, which is already dominating the box office internationally.
She wants to remain graceful, long-limbed and lean
The pair’s on-set personal trainer, Ramona Braganza, spoke to Healthista about how she keeps the stars in top shape for their steaming sex scenes. Dakota worked out four times a week for 40 minutes at the end of shooting. ‘Dakota had been training a month before in New York City with a trainer, and I got some guidance on what she wanted, which was to remain as graceful, long-limbed and lean’, says Ramona. ‘With Dakota, she’s very lean anyhow. She’s such a graceful, lean looking woman, and I just kind of accented that because that’s really what Anastasia is like. She’s a college girl; she’s not a gym rat’.
To tone up, Dakota was put through her paces with resistance training, using no more than five pounds of weight for strength training four times a week, cardio on the treadmill and hot yoga twice a week. ‘Much of our warm up was stretching, all dance-related’, Ramona reveals of their workouts together. ‘Then we would go down onto the floor and do more of the body strength—walking planks and things like that. Then we would go on to abs, which was more pilates-based. Then we would end up doing legs, which was a lot of the lying down leg stuff. Sometimes we would do a circuit that I would put together with a band for back exercises and posture because posture is really important’.

Focused on looking good naked, Dakota Johnson told Access Hollywood, ‘I totally understand now why people exercise, because it kind of f****** feels awesome’.

Dakota stuck with a strict food delivery service whilst filming, reveals Ramona, but has also been reported to love cold-pressed raw juice. She has been spotted drinking Juice Box’s Tumeric Tonic on set to keep her energy levels and vitamins up during long hours. The juice consists of organic turmeric from either Hawaiian or Peru—depending on the season—as well as lemon, ginger and organic raw wildflower honey.
‘They pretty much followed the principles that I speak about in my 3-2-1 nutrition plan. It’s just proportions, when to eat, smaller meals and more meals’, Ramona advises.
