Feelings of self-doubt stopping you from reaching your full potential? Coaching Trainer and Co-Founder of The Coaching Masters, Liam James Collins reveals 6 ways you can overcome feelings of insecurity and apprehension

It’s completely normal to experience self-doubt at certain points in your life.

As humans, we question if what we’re doing is good enough, if we’re good enough and whether we can tackle future obstacles that may later arise.

However, it is important to realise that experiencing self-doubt should be a temporary feeling – and when it’s not, it can become a problem.

It can take just one comment of ‘you’re not good enough’ to introduce a path into doubting yourself

Self-doubt can stem from previous experiences which go as far back as your childhood, past relationships, or work life.

It can take just one comment of ‘you’re not good enough’ to introduce a path into doubting yourself and everything you do.

If you don’t approach, tackle, and resolve these feelings, it could lead to lack of motivation, difficulty making decisions, anxiety, and depression.

Here are six simple steps which can help you to overcome self-doubt…

#1 Identity your values

It might be difficult to think about your values whilst experiencing self-doubt but taking a step back to identity them will really help you to develop a sense of worth and focus on the positives rather than the negatives.

If you understand and focus on your values and remind yourself of them every day, your life will become influenced by them.

Whether it’s your kindness, forgivingness, or dedication, figuring out your values will truly help you overcome self-doubt and think positively about yourself and your attributes.

#2 Don’t compare yourself

There are roughly eight billion people living on this earth and every single one of us is going to be different.

Even the people with the closest DNA to us, will all lead completely different lives. So just think, why would you compare yourself to other people?

We are all unique in many ways and constantly comparing yourself to others can only result in happiness and feelings of self-doubt.

comparison is the thief of joy

Comparisons to others will leave you focusing on what you don’t have as opposed to what you do, so try to focus on yourself rather than others.

Remember, ‘comparison is the thief of joy’.

#3 Find a job you love

We spend a huge portion of our lives working and what we experience during our working life can contribute to our perception of ourselves and how we view our capabilities.

For this reason, you should not underestimate the importance of finding and doing a job you love.

If you don’t love your job, or are ready for a change, a career in coaching could be the answer to overcoming self-doubt, as well as giving you career and financial freedom.

To be a successful coach, you need to harness your natural talents, interests, passions, and past experiences to help other.

Doing this will help you to overcome self-doubt and help others in a similar situation do the same.

#4 Have a good support network

Part of the reason we have friends and family in our lives is for them to uplift us and make our lives better – so use them!

Whenever you’re doubting yourself, you must remember that you are not alone. Your peers and family will be your biggest supporters and remind you of how brilliant you are.

They should be able to remind you that your self-doubt is unnecessary, and if they don’t, they might be contributing to your feelings and insecurities.

Having a good support system might be as easy as getting rid of a wrong support system.

If people in your life are making you doubt yourself even more, you must withdraw from the ‘friendship’. It could help to bring the positive energy you need.

#5 Take a break

One of the best ways to overcome your feelings of self-doubt is to simply take a break.

The longer we stay in a situation that is making us feel negative the longer we will become stuck, and the more difficult it is to come out the other side.

Taking a step back to relax or do something you enjoy will help you to clear your mind and possibly see thing with a new, fresh perspective.

Returning to any issues with a new, positive mindset will help you see things differently and will stamp out any self-doubt.

#6 Practice self-love

If you’re prone to feelings of self-doubt, practicing self-love can be incredibly beneficial. Self-love is never selfish, and we should all take a little more time of ourselves.

Practicing being kind to ourselves is so important when overcoming self-doubt.

Whether it’s meditation, a monthly massage, or even a walk in park to clear your head and connect with your thoughts, putting time aside for yourself regularly is important and could be the key to leading a more positive life – free of self-doubt and negativity.
