Feeling exhausted? Maca powder could help

If you feel exhausted all the time or suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, maca could help. Healthista’s Nutritional Director Rick Hay explains its benefits, in our Trendy Nutrients A – Z series

The maca plant originates from South America and is a relative of the radish,’ says Healthista’s nutritional director Rick Hay.

‘Maca is used for energy production because it helps balance your hormone levels. So if you suffer from chronic tiredness, low energy and a general feeling of brain fog, you might want to consider taking maca supplements.

‘Maca can help treat anxiety and is part of the group of botanicals, known as adaptogens, which give you nervous system support. This is due to the fact that maca is rich in vitamin C and magnesium.

‘It can also help you gain muscle, boost energy and improve exercise performance.

One study conducted by the School of Psychology and Sports Sciences, Northumbria University focused on the performance of eight male cyclists. They found that all eight improved the time in which they completed a 40km bike ride, after 14 days of taking maca supplements.

In addition, maca is high in fibre so it will balance blood sugar levels, keep your mood up and help with regularity.

Looking for a nutrient powder that contains maca? Try a scoop of the Healthista ‘Body Food’ nutrient powder daily in a little water or juice, before and during exercise.

Maca comes in powder form and can be blended into a smoothie, juices, yoghurt and cereals. Try Naturya Organic Maca Powder £5.99 from Healthista Shop.
