Healthista takes a look into the natural highs that can help to boost mood, energy, improve sleep and give us a sense of wellbeing with nutritional director, Rick Hay
Over the past decade we have managed to develop a vast understanding about what the body requires to function optimally. Nutrients, minerals and vitamins have a key role to play in the way we feel mentally and there are a number of supplements and superfoods that can act as natural highs to boost mood, energy, improve sleep and give us a sense of well being. Today, Healthista’s Nutrition Director explains St John’s Wort.
Rick Hay says: ‘One of the best natural remedies to help elevate mood is St.John’s Wort. It’s well researched and has been used traditionally for hundreds of years for this purpose.
‘If you’re feeling a little bit down, you might be suffering from mild depression, mild anxiety, or insomnia, this may help.
‘St John’s Wort works through the brain neurotransmitter system (which regulates mood) by helping increase both noradrenaline and also serotonin which are neurotransmitters in the brain that can help us feel good.
‘If you take St.John’s wort you can expect an elevation of mood. But you will need to take it for about 10-12 weeks – anything less and it won’t have a full affect – though I have used it with some clients who have felt better in as little as a couple of weeks.’
