Healthista’s Nutritional Director Rick Hay explains the benefits of beetroot powder and how to get it
Healthy foods, snacks and drinks have exploded on to the market and it’s left us feeling spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what non-artificial energy bar or detox tea we are going to try next.
But how much do we know about trendy ingredients really? This is why we asked Healthista’s Nutritional Director Rick Hay to fill in the blanks on the most confusing super-nutrients of the moment. Today, he’s covering beetroot powder.
Rick Hay says: ‘Over the last couple of years one of the key natural ingredients that is being used in sport is beetroot powder.
‘Beetroot helps produce nitric oxide in the body, this makes it an effective vasodilator which is when blood vessels widen to allow for improved blood flow.
‘The nitric oxide will also increase oxygen levels in the blood and benefit energy production during exercise when the body demands more oxygen, essentially with more oxygen you would be able to exercise for longer and some studies suggest beetroot can improve performance and endurance in those who exercise.
‘Beetroot is also rich in iron, a key mineral the body requires to make hemoglobin and transfer oxygen in the blood. This is important for muscle contraction during exercise.
The deep dark red pigments of beetroot are packed full of antioxidants which help fight off free radicals and nourish the immune system.
You can take beetroot powder in water, juice or a smoothie and can also be sprinkled on to your cereal.’
