Healthy foods, snacks and drinks have exploded on to the market and it’s left us feeling spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what non-artificial energy bar or detox tea we are going to try next.
But do we actually know the true goodness that are in these guilt free products? We have decided to call upon the expert advice of Healthista’s Nutritional Director Rick Hay to fill in the blanks and keep us up to speed on these trendy nutrients. Today we begin with the South American superfood berry, acai.
Rick Hay, Healthista’s Nutrition Director says: ‘One of the most talked about superfoods of the last few years is acai, I call it a super berry or a superfood for good reason.
It’s packed full of antioxidants and vitamins, especially being high in vitamin C, which helps with immune function and aids collagen cross-linking which is what provides skin firmness and will also boost hair and nail health. Acai is also used for energy production thanks to the richness of antioxidants and amino acids the berry contains, this allows for increased stamina, and faster recovery.
Acai can be used in a smoothie, in a powdered form, you can use it to make a non-dairy ice cream or a superfood bowl and you can take it in capsules.’
