Queen of Retreats founder Caroline Sylger Jones and her team explore spas of all kinds around the globe. This week, Caroline explored the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay.

Overlooking lovely Jimbaran Bay, this beachside spa resort is set across 35 acres and has a dedicated Healing Village Spa where you can while away your time with therapies inspired by nature and Balinese traditions. There are eleven treatment huts – three of them at the ocean’s edge – so getting a session without booking way in advance is easy, and there are three couples suite for those who want to be pampered together.

Try a Chakra Balance Massage with Aura-Soma, which is exclusive to the resort and uses the vibrational power of colour to rebalances your seven main chakras or energy wheels. The focus here is on touch and connection, rather than muscle manipulation. Or book a session with one of the practitioners in residence, who range from a Balinese Spiritual Healer to an expert cranial sacral therapist. Those who want to get their skin in order should try a Pure TDA facial – a non-invasive, high performance facial that improves the appearance of wrinkles and reduce skin irritation and inflammation. Special meditation and yoga programmes are on offer throughout the year.

To get your heart pumping, this resort is the only resort in Asia to offer a heli-surfing experience in conjunction with Tropicsurf. They take guests to uncrowded waves and the famous Grajagan, which is on the edge of a national park and on Java Island. Or stay on firm ground and do a Tennis Programme with Peter Burwash International, which includes lessons for adults, clinics and junior tennis. There are also guided cycling journeys to the most scenic parts of the island, nearby villages or a four-hour tour which takes inthe volcanic crater of Mount Batur, ancient temples and the stunning landscape of rice fields.

Wellbeing is about being creative too, and the cultural centre here offers craft sessions such as wood carving and traditional painting – they also invite local artists to exhibit their work if you’d like to pick up a painting to inspire you once back at home. For foodies, there’s a Cooking Academy, where you can learn to make classic Indonesian dishes or introduce your children to pastry making.

Dine in style off fusion meals, have brunch or a mocktail or cocktail at the new beach club, Sundara, or have a private Indonesian dinner in your own open-air dining pavilion. All 147 private villas here are inspired by traditional Balinese architecture and have their own stone-walled courtyards, indoor and outdoor living areas and a private plunge pool and sun terrace.

If you want a treat with friends or family, book the three-bedroom Imperial villa, which sleeps up to nine adults and comes fully equipped with a butlers pantry, a gym, your own personal trainer or yoga instructor and a 68 m2 swimming pool. Not bad.
