Healthista’s Nutritional Director Rick Hay explains the benefits of coconut water powder and how to get it

Healthy foods, snacks and drinks have exploded on to the market and it’s left us feeling spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what non-artificial energy bar or detox tea we are going to try next.

But do we actually know the true goodness that are in these guilt free products? We have decided to call upon the expert advice of Healthista’s Nutritional Director Rick Hay to fill in the blanks and keep us up to speed on these trendy nutrients.Today, he’s covering coconut water powder.

Rick Hay says: ‘Coconut water powder is great for rebalancing electrolytes after a strong workout.

‘Electrolytes are minerals in your body that help level out the amount of water in your body, balance the nervous system and make sure that your muscles, heart and brain are working properly.

‘Potassium, calcium and magnesium are key electrolytes found in coconut water powder. They are particularly beneficial after exercise if you’ve been sweating, as they help restore electrolyte balance.

‘Coconut water powder is also rich in vitamin C and iron, both of which aid in energy production. On top of that, coconut water powder can help replenish glycogen stores after exercise – glycogen is fuelled from food which is stored in your muscles and it’s used up when you workout.

‘So if you’re feeling a bit tired, it can give you a post-workout energy boost.’
