LONG HAUL

Warriors, Waves & Wisdom, Sri Lanka
2-9 March

Led by Yeotown founder and yoga teacher Mercedes Ngoh, this 7 night retreat is held at Talaramba Reef on the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka. It’s a yummy mix of yoga and surfing, good food, inspiring cultural excursions and spa treatments, and it’s open to beginner surfers and yogis as well as experienced practitioners. You stay in one of two beachfront villas with their own swimming pools, set amid tropical gardens of coconut palms, cashews, mango and frangipani. What’s not to like? It’ll be nice and warm there too.

MEDIUM HAUL

Yoga by the Red Sea, Egypt
29 March – 5 April

Kundalini yoga teacher and champion freediver Sara Campbell (below) and one of Denmark’s leading Vinyasa flow yoga teachers, Joern Nortoft, are running a new yoga retreat in the Sinai. You’ll be based in Sara’s hippy-chic home town of Dahab at the Amanda Hotel, a small, family-run and friendly place directly on the beach with a yoga studio overlooking the ocean. Enjoy a blend of hatha and kundalini yoga – Joern teaches a serene classical hatha yoga, while Sara’s kundalini classes tend to shake things up a little. There’s also massage and physiotherapy, meditation, snorkelling in the Red Sea and a two-day overnight trip to the Sinai – take it from me, the desert is a simply amazing space where tired souls cannot help but rejuvenate.

Suleyman’s Garden, Turkey
Beginning 28 April

This family-run, working farm is a wonderful new space to do yoga – enjoy simple accommodation in chalets amidst the crops and a pleasingly simple authenticity. The yoga space is fantastic – a shala in the midst of a red pepper field with stunning views out to the sea beyond. The week we were there, the evening class was timed to end with pranayama and meditation in front of a spectacular sunset. Food is healthy, served buffet style, and treatments are available from Gianna Karagoz, whose of English/Italian descent, trained in UK and Thailand and has more than 20 years experience. Yoga teacher Trishna Horvath kicks off the season with a ‘Being Yoga’ retreat from 28 April – 5 May.

SHORT HAUL

Kali Yoga, Italy
Beginning 19 April

The genius people at Kaliyoga are opening their third gorgeous retreat venue in April – this time in the beautiful Puglia region of southern Italy. You’ll stay in a traditional Masseria (17th century county house) or a Trullo cottage in the grounds and enjoy daily yoga, cycling, walking, trips to the beach, delicious healthy food and a good selection of relaxing treatments including Thai yoga massage and reflexology. Dynamic Yoga as pioneered by yoga teacher Godfrey Devereux is the house speciality – Kaliyoga’s main teacher is Tashidawa, aka Tashi, who teaches flowing dynamic yoga with poise, warmth and humour.

Silver Island, Greece
20-26 April

Denise Cook from Colorado (who has over 14 years of experience teaching Power Ashtanga, Vinyasa flow and Yin yoga) kicks off the second season at Silver Island, one of the most authentic, peaceful yoga retreats I found last year. A 15 minute boat ride from the coast of Evia island, it has no internet connection and no mains power but that makes it even more of a ‘stop the world’ retreat. The ambiance is artistic and relaxed – between yoga classes, breathe in great big lungfuls of the clean, crisp marine air, read a book on the meditation platform, grab some rock shoes and a snorkel and mask and paddle out to turtle-hunt at sea or check out the art drawer, which is packed with paints and crafty bits for your use.
