Lisa Buckingham reviews new FuzeX, the bright new running collection from Asics

If you’re a shy, retiring wallflower who likes to blend into the background, the new ASICS fuzeX range is probably not for you. But if you like bright, popping colour combined with great functionality, read on.

This jacket suits spring running – it’s feather-light and keeps the worst of the chill off, but packs down into a pocket once you’ve warmed up

I’ve taken a picture of myself wearing both the jacket and tights in the same graphic print. This is not something I would necessarily repeat out on the street because I look like I’ve been paint-balling. It’s a bit like wearing double denim – a bit much – but there are plenty of colour-ways in the range to avoid this clash.

The tights are beautifully comfortable, with a flatteringly thick waistband

Each piece of kit is a delight in itself. The jacket is perfect for someone like me – I overheat horribly when I run, but I’m always freezing to start off with. This jacket suits spring running – it’s feather-light and keeps the worst of the chill off when you set out, but packs down into a pocket once you’ve warmed up.

The tights are beautifully comfortable, with a flatteringly thick waistband, which also means they don’t ride down when you run, and they have the perfect iPhone-seized pocket on the back. The relaxed-fit tank top is soft with a nice heavy hem at the bottom to stop it wafting about, and the racer-back is spot on for an over-heater like me.

The trainers are a lightweight shoe for neutral runners (i.e. those whose feet don’t roll in or out when they run) and those who run both outdoors, on the treadmill and in fitness classes. They have an 8mm feel drop, which means they’re lower to the ground than some road running shoes. I took them out for a 10k run and loved the responsive feel this gave (and it also means they’re low-profile enough to wear day-to-day). The gel technology that the brand is known for also gives a lovely cushiness.

Overall, a top selection of kit from a trusted brand.

All kit is available from asics.co.uk
